The headlines are full of talk about a pending divorce between Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher.
A lot of this talk is reckless. Was she too old for him? Was he too young for her? Is somebody to blame?
It’s a bit crazy for us to be so invested with this Hollywood couple, but what is particularly sad about Demi and Ashton is that their admirers know that their passion for each other has been genuine. They’ve been together over 12 years out of a love that’s real. You can’t fake that. The age difference between them was going to be challenge, in any event. That much would have been just as uphill if Demi were in her 20s and Ashton in his 40s. Like most women over 40, I’m a bit tired of these generalizations that Cougars have it harder than their younger counterparts. Relationships require the same dedication at any age.
What we need to keep in mind for any relationship, especially our own, is that people change. We all do. But transformations are especially rapid and intense between the ages of 21 and 33, which has been Ashton’s span. That cannot be helped, and that’s what he and Demi are up against.
One ironic note: Ashton has been accused of philandering with bimbos at exactly the moment he has taken over the role left behind by Charlie Sheen on the TV show Two and a Half Men. Is the role itself accursed, as Superman has been rumored to be, or Macbeth? One can’t help but wonder!
